Tent & Tensile Structure  Construction

As the technology of fabric welding has become the preferred method of joining vinyl panels, the introduction of PVC-Coated Weldable Webbing has offered tent builders the added convenience of adding structural support without stitching for both edging and seam reinforcement applications. It is being used successfully in large military, special event, and permanent fabric structures.

Compared to the thinner webs used in the sign and banner industries, Weldable Webbing for tents is built up to 16,500 pounds tensile strength.
These structural variations of PVC-Coated Weldable Webbing have been specified, developed,  and tested in conjunction with leading builders. Note that all of these types of webbing are currently being used successfully in various structures.

Because of the thickness and density of the heavier materials, welding with high frequency equipment can require dimensional limitation on bar pressure to allow adequate weld time without damaging thinner fabrics. Hot air welders that direct heat into the space between two PVC coated surfaces attain a full-strength weld with normal settings. The material can also be sewn and later heat sealed.

PVC-Coated Weldable Webbing is used as a structural element in larger tents and tensile structures. It can be both welded and sewn. Sewing is important in terminating runs with loops in load bearing hardware. Sewing both reinforces the overlap loop and prevents the welded surfaces from peeling. Another advantage of PVC coated web is that one can seal needle holes by passing a heat gun over the webbing to melt the vinyl after stitching.

Note that PVC-Coated Weldable Webbing is coated on both sides. Thus it can be installed as a structural member by being sandwiched into a three-layer welded construction within an overlap seam.
